For a man who gifted Nigeria with a unique enduring symbol of our national identity, Pa Benedict Odiase never was truly appreciated.
The writer/composer of the Nigerian National Anthem, the famous, awe-inspiring, passion-rousing melodious 2-stanza poem, Odiase was content to sit by the sidelines away from the media circus, and political merry-go-round. He barely was noticed, over the generations, and slowly his name became a footnote in the great history books of this country.
A young Odiase, then the Director of Music in the Nigeria Police Band composed the iconic “Arise O Compatriots’ in the year 1978, and after a life of lengthy service to his fatherland, he retired in 1992 as a Deputy Commisioner of Police, and passed away on June 11, 2013.

Long live the Republic…
