Sunshine Stars Crash Out of CAF Champions, Lose 4-3 on Aggregate to Al Ahly

NIGERIA’S only hope for a continental title was dashed on Sunday when Sunshine Stars of Akure were knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Al Ahly of Egypt.

Mohammed Nagy ‘Gedo”s 29th minute goal was all that separated the two sides in the return leg played behind closed doors, as the six-time champions, qualified for the final on a 4-3 aggregate win.

The two sides had battlled to a 3-3 draw in the first leg played a forthnight ago in Ijebu-Ode.

Ahly’s victory sets up an all North African final, as the Egyptian will square it up with defending champions, Esperance of Tunisia in next month’s two legged match.

Sunshine Stars, it would be noted, also lost out at last year’s semi-final stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, losing to another North African side, Club Afrcain of Tunisia.

The elimination of the Akure based side, marked yet another year of disappointment for Nigeria in continental football as the trio of Dolphins, Heartland and Warri Wolves had earlier crashed out from the Champions League and the Confederation Cup.

The Nigerians are expected to arrive today from the Egyptian capital.
