Armed Robbers Kill Adamawa State University Assistant Information Officer

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers killed the assistant information and protocol officer of the Adamawa State University (ADSU) Mubi, Ahmadu Yerima Bawuro and injured one other person during a raid on Wednesday.

Confirming the incident yesterday, the Chief Information Officer of the institution, Ahmad Sajo, said the officer was shot dead at a local tea joint while buying bread for his family.

“Yes I can confirm to you that Ahmadu Yerima Bawuro, an assistant information and protocol officer, a prince and younger brother to the Durbin Adamawa was shot dead by yet to be identified gunmen,” he said.

In a related development, residents of Gulak, the administrative headquarters of Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, have decried alleged harassment and arbitrary arrests by security operatives. The residents alleged that soldiers, while searching for suspected terrorists, arrest innocent citizens.

Unidentified gunmen had last two weeks attacked and ransacked Gulak, the home town of Ahmad Ali Gulak, presidential adviser to President Jonathan on Political Matters during which three policemen were killed.

“The soldiers beat up people, rummage through personal belongings and pilfered money. They also arrested innocent people, including the wife of the proprietor of an Arabic school,” a resident, Habu Danjuma said.

When contacted, the state police command said it was not aware of the raid.

“We are not aware and the police are not involved. You may check with other security organizations,” ASP Nemuel Yoila, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer said.

The spokesman for the 23rd Armoured Brigade in Yola, Lieutenant Sale Buba, also denied the allegation.

“We are not aware of such, and if there is anything like that, I will brief you,” he said.

But the member representing the area, who is also the Speaker of the state Assembly, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, confirmed the situation, but called on the people not to take laws into their hands, saying they are working assiduously to see that justice prevails.
