Obafemi Awolowo Students Want Student Unionism Ban Lifted

We want it back! This is the slogan, most students on campus are chanting. It has been up to a year and some months, that the Student Union Government(SUG) of Obafemi Awolowo University, was banned following the 10% increment on the acceptance fees, which are to be paid by freshers.

Before the 2010/2011 admission session, the newly admitted were to pay a sum of #2,000 only. But, the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Faborode, increased the fee to #20,000. The student governing body perceived it callous and unfair.

They staged a protest, and according to the university rule, should academic activities be stopped for 72 hours due to protest or any unnecessary circumstances, the school would be shut and the students would also be sent back home. This was exactly what happened, during the registration exercise of the 2010/2011 admission session, and the school authority banned the activities of the SUG on campus.

When the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Idowu Omole assumed office, last year, he did not rescind the decision of his predecessor. This same amount was paid as well as for 2011/2012 session .

Now, majority of the students want it back, saying ‘we are fed up of the deprivations of our right’. Series of letter has been written to the VC through the Dean Student Affairs(DSA). Some are being pasted all around the school campus. The latest one, was over the weekend, when some students wrote a letter to the VC, titled ‘An Open Letter To The VC’. Another one, was from the banned SUG, demanding an urgent meeting with the VC.

However it appears students may not want a protest now, because examinations is barely a week away. We will keep you informed as matter unfolds.
The struggle continue.!
