German Doctor Kidnapped in Enugu Released
A Spanish doctor who was kidnapped in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, on April 4 has been freed by his captors.
A spokesman of the Spanish foreign ministry told AFP Saturday that the 58-year-old doctor, Jose Manuel Machimbarrena Corcuera, who works for a clinic belonging to a foundation financially supported by Catholic institution, Opus Dei, “was freed on Friday.”
The spokesman, however, said he did not have any details of the circumstances in which the hostage was freed.
He said the man had been kidnapped for ransom, citing Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, who had said the “organisation that he belongs to wants the utmost discretion.”
The freed doctor who was working with the Niger Foundation Hospital in Enugu was said to be hale and hearty when he was picked up around thinkers corner, a suburb of Enugu metropolis where his abductors left him at about 9.35 pm.
A statement from the office of Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Ebere Amaraizu, said the Spanish doctor was immediately reunited with his hospital community.
The Police was however silent in disclosing if any ransom was paid or not.
His release came about over a month after two foreigners, a British and an Italian, were held hostage by a faction of Boko Haram and were later killed in a rescue bid in Kano.
A German engineer was also kidnapped on the outskirts of the city in January.
