Obafemi Awolowo Appoints New Vice Chancellor
The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has appointed a new vice-chancellor for the institution. He is Professor Idowu Bamitale Omole and his appointment takes effect from 24 June, 2011.
A release by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that the council made the announcement after its meeting on Saturday, 14 May, 2011 and by this development, Professor Omole becomes the 10th vice-chancellor of the institution.
Born on 7 September, 1954 in Oye, Ekiti State, Professor Omole attended Methodist High School, Ilesa and Government College, Ibadan respectively for his secondary school education. He proceeded thereafter to the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University and graduated with Second Class Bachelor of Arts (BA) History (Hons.), before proceeding to the University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, where he had his Ph.D. in International Relations in June 1986.
Professor Omole joined the service of the university as an Assistant Lecturer in December 1986 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of International Relations on 1 October, 2000.
He has also held several management positions including Head, Department of International Relations, from August 1996 to July 1998 and Dean, Faculty of Administration, from 2006 to 2008. He was also Deputy Director, Office of Linkages and Sponsored Research and member, Governing Board of Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), Badagry, Nigeria, between 2006 and 2008 as well as Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University from 2005 to 2009.
Professor Omole has made significant contributions to the development of the university as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and the Advancement Office Committee. In addition, he was part of the university team that wrote the proposal that won the $8 million Carnegie Corporation Grant of New York for the institution. Additionally, Prof. Omole was also part of the team that wrote the proposal that won the World Bank Step-B Grant for the university.
At various times, he was a Visiting Lecturer at the Foreign Service Academy and has been an external examiner to many Nigerian universities for years.
Prof. Omole, in the course of his academic career, has travelled to many countries to attend conferences, workshops and establish partnership and academic linkages on behalf of the university.
He has, in the course of his illustrious career, secured grants and fellowship for some academic members of staff and trained over 250 members of staff in research methodology and grantmanship, while he was also pivotal in the compilation of the current University Alumni Data Base from 1965 to date.
Professor Omole has remained active in research and since 2009, has been the Nigerian coordinator of the multinational project on Conflict Resolution between OAU, Ile-Ife, Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenya and King’s College, London.
Professor Omole has over 52 published articles in both national and international journals and has also supervised over six M.Sc. theses, several MIR theses and one Ph.D. thesis in the course of his eventful academic career.
