The secretary of the Benue State government, Dr Audu Achi-gili, late Friday evening, died in an auto crash in Igbor Gwer Local Government Area on the Makurdi/Otukpo highway in the state.
The sad news which hit the Government House, that evening, caused confusion among top government officials, members of the Peoples Democratic Party, friends and family members.
Sunday Tribune sources close to the government, disclosed that Dr Achigili, who was going to Otukpo for the new year celebration with his daughter and his relation died on the spot when a luxury bus which was heading towards Makurdi, had a head-on collision with his car.
According to a sources, his daughter and the driver sustained not too severe injuries while the SSG’s remains had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary in Makurdi.
In its reaction, the government, through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Cletus Akwaya, described the death of the SSG as a rude shock to the government and people of the state, especially at a time when everyone was looking forward to a blissful new year.
Akwaya explained that the late SSG left Makurdi at about 6.30pm after performing a state function with the Deputy Governor, Chief Steven Lawani, at the Government House.
